Discovery Health aimed to revolutionize healthcare by launching Connected Care, a digital platform designed to improve member-provider interactions, provide comprehensive member health data, and streamline medical procedures, including telemedicine. This innovation, spearheaded by its robust telemedicine feature, became vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Connected Care embodies Discovery Health's dedication to simplifying healthcare administration and enhancing patient outcomes.
Discovery Health's Connected Care platform epitomizes future-forward digital healthcare, providing streamlined access to critical services. From online appointment booking to virtual consultations, medical assistance is readily available. Coupled with an extensive electronic health record system, it offers a comprehensive view of each patient's health journey, enabling tailored care. Amid COVID-19, Connected Care became an indispensable healthcare product encapsulating the essence of personalized, digitally-powered healthcare.
Discovery's Connected Care caters to a broad demographic, primarily affluent South African females aged 25-54. The users fall into two groups: General Members, who value the convenience of online consultations, point-of-care tech, e-scripting, and medicine ordering; and Members with Chronic Conditions, who use the platform's resources for comprehensive management of their ailments, benefiting from personalized coaching and remote monitoring. This tailored approach enables Connected Care to meet each group's unique needs, enhancing user experienc

Throughout the design process of the Connected Care app, Discovery Health carried out comprehensive research, including user interviews, competitive analysis, technical exploration, and usability testing. Findings revealed a need for easy access to healthcare services, personalization, and robust data security. Armed with these insights, the Connected Care app offers a convenient, personalized, and secure platform to manage healthcare needs. With over 1 million downloads and 500,000 active users, scoring an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars, its success is evident. Appointment scheduling, medical record viewing, and chronic condition management emerged as the most popular features, validating that Connected Care successfully delivers a user-friendly healthcare management solution.

As the Design Lead for the Connected Care App, I managed the design strategy and guided the team to deliver crucial features. We initiated the design process using the valuable user insights and pain points defined by the project's business analyst and research and development departments. These insights informed the creation of our initial prototypes. Once these were developed, we performed usability testing with a select group of healthcare practitioners. Although a separate team conducted further user testing, we concurrently maintained our momentum with feature delivery. Throughout the project, my responsibilities included mentoring junior designers, fostering a collaborative environment, and ensuring alignment between our design activities and the project's overarching vision and business goals.
Dashboard
The Dashboard is a personalized interface showing relevant health notifications and alerts in a prioritized manner. It hosts quick features like "Find a Provider" filters, consultation info, device management, health balances, and vaccine tracking. The design focuses on simplicity, speed, and personalization for seamless health management.

Find a Healthcare Provider
This feature enables members to find and choose healthcare professionals based on their specific needs, leveraging criteria like location and specialty. It simplifies the search process and promotes personalized care, accommodating different consultation types, thus enhancing healthcare accessibility.

Booking and Virtual Consultation
Members can book appointments online or over the phone, with notifications issued to both members and providers, and automated calendar updates post-confirmation. This seamless booking journey ensures a coordinated healthcare experience.

Post consult actions & summary
Follow up on consultations, tailoring actions to individual outcomes. It ranges from rating care and viewing a summary to managing referrals and medication. Notifications keep patients informed, while a consultation summary offers a historical health record, enabling continuous and integrated care.

Virtual Consultations
The "Virtual Consult" feature allows members to engage in virtual consultations through video chat, phone calls, or secure messaging. The Virtual Waiting Room and Consult Room are designed to ensure a smooth, interactive experience with healthcare providers.

The Connected Care project significantly influenced my understanding of design's critical role in healthcare accessibility. It reinforced my belief in user-centred and data-driven design, particularly the importance of continuous and iterative user feedback sessions in shaping our design process - a key takeaway I've incorporated into my future work.
Furthermore, the need for flexibility and adaptability became clear, both in managing team dynamics and responding to external factors like the COVID-19 pandemic. We incorporated features to assist users through the crisis and shifted from an office-based to a remote-working model while still managing to keep up with delivery timelines.
These experiences have not only shaped my perspective on design but have also honed my skills in team management and adapting to unforeseen circumstances. The lessons learned from this project continue to influence my approach and decision-making in my current role.
As Design Lead on the Discovery Health Connected Care app, we revolutionized healthcare management through innovative technology and design. Our aim to enhance healthcare accessibility, personalization, and security has been realized through over 1 million downloads, 500,000+ active users, and a high satisfaction score. Our platform has simplified administrative tasks, improved health outcomes, and become a trusted healthcare management tool. Looking back, I'm proud of how the app, with key features like online bookings, virtual consultations, and secure electronic health records, has impacted healthcare experiences, especially during a global crisis.
