Discovery Health, South Africa's largest health insurer serving over 3.5 million members, offers various health plans and a digital wellness program, Discovery Vitality. Despite a suite of preventive health services, member utilization was low, leading to greater instances of illness and more expensive medical care. To encourage proactive health care, Discovery Health embarked on creating a digital health platform, with the Health Coaches product as the pioneering offering.
Health Coaches, the inaugural product on Discovery Health's Digital Health Platform (D2HP), offers premier remote health coaching for members, especially those managing life-altering health events. This service, accessible via the Discovery Health app or website, provides personalized coaching and guidance from certified health coaches.
The core set of users of the Health Coaches product are health coaches tasked with guiding Discovery Health members through life-changing health events. Coming from diverse health-related fields, they are qualified and accredited professionals who conduct motivational interviews, assist in goal-setting, track progress, educate members on their health conditions, and facilitate referrals to relevant interventions. They use the Health Coaches product to manage clients and provide personalized guidance. Recognizing the unique needs of health coaches was critical to crafting a user-centric Health Coaches product.

In the Health Coaches project, our research approach centered around contextual inquiry and task analysis, focused on our primary users: the health coaches. Our methods allowed for a deeper understanding of user needs, increased product usability, and reduced development costs.
Our initial face to face usability testing sessiones were transformational, instilling an empathetic understanding of the health coaches' role in patients' healing journeys, which informed our approach throughout the project. From the insights gathered, we prioritized platform features that promoted seamless communication and collaboration among members, coaches, and doctors, and equipped health coaches with effective patient management tools.

As the Lead UX Designer on the Health Coaches project, I reported directly to the deputy CIO of Discovery Health and played a crucial role in the success of the product. My responsibilities encompassed defining and executing design strategy, as well as onboarding, training, and managing junior and intermediate designers on the platform team.
Throughout the design process, I facilitated design workshops, high-level problem-solving sessions, user research, user interviews, and product usability testing. Collaborating with business analysts, developers, internal healthcare practitioners, and stakeholders, I established a collaborative and iterative design approach to ensure the highest quality output within tight deadlines.
Patient Management
Enable health coaches to access and manage a list of eligible members, view member profiles, and access summaries and dashboards for each member.

Scheduling
Allow health coaches to schedule appointments and view their schedules to help them plan and manage their workflow effectively.

Communication
Facilitate various communication channels (voice, asynchronous chat, and video) between members, coaches, and doctors, initiated by either the coach or the member.

Patient Health History
Access to Health History and Compliance: Provide coaches with access to the member's pertinent health history and their compliance with set pathways per condition when communicating with the member or their doctor.

Note-taking & Feedback
Enable coaches to take notes during their interactions with members, which can be shared with the member's doctor when needed. Track or record interactions between coach and member, with the ability for the coach and doctor to trigger actions based on coaching session outcomes.

Dashboard & Metrics
Equip coaches with a dashboard that displays key metrics for all members they are guiding, along with drill-downs to assess each member's progress along pathways and aid in planning their workflow and scheduling.


We adopted a robust, two-week sprint design process for the Health Coaches project, merging comprehensive techniques with collaborative feedback. In week one, our focus was on refining design concepts with our internal team and healthcare consultants, tailoring solutions to meet user expectations and align with the healthcare context. Week two involved collaborating with our development team for technical reviews and task allocation, followed by a final review with business and product stakeholders to ensure strategic alignment. Through regular meetings, design reviews, and retrospectives, we ensured consistent team updates, feedback incorporation, and process improvement. This in-depth and collaborative approach was instrumental in delivering a user-centric product, catering to both health coaches and patients.

Reflections from the project highlighted the value of direct user interaction, efficacy of iterative design methodologies, and the necessity of striking a balance between structure and adaptability in the design process. The Health Coaches project underscored the importance of iterative design, collaboration, and user-centric principles in making a significant impact in the healthcare sector.
Guiding the Health Coaches project as a Senior Design Lead, I led a transformative digital health service that supports millions.
